Woolworth Building

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. Commissioned by chain store mogul Frank W. Woolworth, this brilliant 60-story example of early 19th century neo-gothic architecture is still something to behold even though it’s overshadowed by some of New York’s modern edifices. The building, designed and built by Cass Gilbert, was known as the “Cathedral of Commerce” for several years due to its ornamental gargoyles, flying buttresses, and ornate lobby. There is no organized tour of the building.
